Simple Fall Decorating Ideas

Okay here's a plot twist for you...while Summer is my favorite season in terms of weather, Fall is my favorite season for interior styling. I think the main reason is that to me, Fall is all about being cozy and enjoying time at home with friends and family. For a homebody like me, I love nothing more than cozying up at home with a soft blanket, burning a scented candle and enjoying a glass of wine or hot cup of tea... Anyone else?

Today I want to share some easy Fall decorating ideas with you, and these are all ways that I welcome the changing season into my home. You will see that I gravitate to using warm, earthy tones that are more dark and moody vs the lighter, brighter colors of Spring and Summer. I take my color cues from what is happening outside in nature as the leaves start to change color - red, orange, burgundy, rust and brown are all around us right now as the foliage is changing.

Red is really having a moment right now and I was drawn to this vase from the Studio McGee collection at Target.

I seem to have developed a tradition where I buy a new Studio McGee for Target vase every Fall and I am not mad about it! Here is last year's purchase styled with some dahlia's:

And here is the vase I purchased in 2022 with an arrangement of dried hydrangeas from my garden

Scented Soaps and Candles

I am a huge fan of Mrs. Meyers products and I always change out my scents for the seasons. So simple. I used the peony scent all summer, but now I am onto the Fall Leaves collection. I stumbled across this scent last year at Target and I was so happy to see it in stores again on a recent visit. For my fellow Canadian friends, I can't find this particular scent anywhere locally, but there are several other Fall inspired scents that I quite like. Apple Cider is a good one, and I have seen it at Canadian Tire and Whole Foods. I have the Fall Leaves soaps, spray and candle in my kitchen and bathroom.

When it comes to candles, I love to pick a cozy, woodsy scent for the Fall. Here are the current candles I am burning in our home (and loving):

  1. Fall Leaves by Mrs. Meyers

  2. Vanilla Pumpkin from Trader Joes

  3. Fireplace Embers from the Jillian Harris x Joe Fresh collaboration

  4. Santal and Ginger from the Studio McGee x Threshold collaboration

2 out of the 4 of these candles came from the grocery store

These candles are not scented but I was drawn to the shape and color , these are another Studio McGee for Target purchase. The candle holders are vintage from a gorgeous store I discovered in Sidney, on Vancouver Island.

Textiles

My favorite way to add color and pattern to my home is with textiles - more specifically with throw pillows, blankets, and table linens. Here is how I styled my formal living room sofa for Fall.

Even though Lucy flattened my decorative pillow while using it to hop onto the back of the sofa, this photo was too cute not to share! I have been joking that this is the most expensive dog bed that money can buy, because hands down the dogs spend the most time here - with that big window and view outside who can blame them? Lucy in particular likes to keep an eye on the squirrels and cats. Plaid just really says "Fall" and this soft throw blanket has been around a few years and it's one of my favorites!

On our family room sectional, we have several pillows and throw blankets because this is where we cozy up to watch TV. I bought this pillow and throw blanket from the Studio McGee for Target collection and I am obsessed with the deep green pillow and the golden rust throw blanket!

I've said it before and I will say it again, I so wish we had a Target in Canada. Their home decor is just so good - and the Threshold Studio McGee collection in particular just has my heart. Even with the exchange rate, these pieces are so affordable and stylish and since their launch back in 2022 I have collected so many wonderful pieces that I absolutely love!

Florals and Stems

Okay, this is my favorite way to invite Fall into my home, with some seasonal stems and flowers! It is dahlia season right now and I am so sad my dahlias didn't come back this year. But I had the pleasure of attending a flower arranging workshop in Victoria at a flower farm (Flowerface) and I got my hands on some gorgeous dahlias. Here are some photos from that workshop:

While I love the flowers of Fall, they don't last long once you pick them and bring them inside, so I rely on faux blooms and stems to style my home through till the Christmas season is upon us.

I use faux florals and stems all over my home. As you will see from the photos below, I use them to decorate my front porch, my living room, fireplace mantle, open shelving, my kitchen island and dining tables.

Pumpkins

For the month of October, I love to display pumpkins - nothing says harvest season like pumpkins am I right? You can see my collection of faux pumpkins on our front porch in the above photos. I have had these pumpkins for years and they just make me happy!

I have a hard time resisting mini white pumpkins at the grocery store and I bought a bag to display on our kitchen island a few weeks back. Then when I hauled out our Thanksgiving Decoration bin, I remembered I bought some faux mini white pumpkins from Crate and Barrel last year, and they are so realistic looking!

I have all different types of pumpkins and many I have had for years and years. While visiting Victoria last week, I was shopping at a store called Hansel Halkett Vintage Home Decor and I couldn't resist adding this faux fur pumpkin to my collection!

Here is the rest of my pumpkin collection, displayed on my built-ins and kitchen shelves:

One more organic element I like to display for Fall? Pine cones and acorns! I found the cutest felt acorns at Target years ago, and I love displaying them in a little bowl every Fall. This year I split them up into two different bowls, one on our entryway table and one on our coffee table in the living room.

Well, that about does it for my Fall decorating round up. My family and I will enjoy all of these decorative touches right through until it's time to decorate for the Christmas holidays. In the coming weeks I will add a few Halloween decorations to the mix, so stay tuned for that!
